Certified Beekeeping Course-20 hours (Lower Mainland)                   SOLD OUT                       $289

Beekeeping in the City: A practical how-to course for beginners with a hands-on field day.

Join Master Beekeepers Lindsay Dault (Owner, Urban Bee Supplies, 10 years experience with 7 years teaching) and Julia Common (Co-founder, Hives for Humanity, 42 years of experience in urban beekeeping and honeybee research) for an innovative, entertaining and highly practical course in beginner beekeeping. Lindsay and Julia, both certified instructors and experienced urban beekeepers, will teach you how to safely and confidently start caring for your own hives - from back yard beekeeping to hobby farm scale (1 - 200 hives). Rooted in a love for bees and the culture of the hive, these instructors offer a fresh approach to beekeeping - it's more than honey!

Learn more about Lindsay and Julia on our instructors bio’s page.

This course includes 20 hours of instruction time, covering:

  • Basics of the honeybee biology and the hive
  • City bylaws + equipment + livestock
  • Disease management and colony health
  • Honey production
  • Apitherapy and the products of the hive
  • Therapeutic beekeeping
  • Honey harvest and extraction
  • Winter preparation and over wintering
  • Swarm captures
  • Discussion, problem solving and questions

All students will also have the opportunity to take part in an apiary field day on May 13, 2017. You will take part in the hands-on inspection of a number of active hives, and conduct a full hive inspection with experienced beekeepers at your side. Beginner Beekeeping Course- Victoria Sessions                                                                                  $239

We offer a 16 hour in depth beginner beekeeping course starting in March.  The course runs Saturday and Sunday from 9-5.  We cover everything from the basic life of a honey bee, equipment, installation, medications, disease control, IPM treatment, field testing, winter preparation, cost evaluation, pest controls, and extraction.  During the course you will go into the hives (weather permitting) and do full inspections.  You will learn about powdered sugar treatments, how to make grease patties and so much more.

What makes our course different than all the rest? You won’t spend the day sitting in the classroom, you will be in the hives, confidently learning how to manage your bees.  We cover everything you need to know to manage a single hive or 100’s.

Any questions you have, we can help.  We will be there for you through your first summer, guiding you through any problems that may arise.  This doesn’t just give you a 16 hour lesson on beekeeping, it gives you support through the whole experience.  Class sizes are a maximum of 15 people.   Includes a copy of “The Backyard Beekeeper, An Absolute Beginners guide”, and handouts.

We ask that those taking the course bring clothes that cover your arms and legs, as we spend a fair amount of time in the hives if weather permits.  If you have your own clothing and tools please bring them, otherwise we can provide them for you, or you can purchase them in the shop.
